I hopped over the channel to Cardiff to give a talk at the South Wales Sustainable Tech group with Oliver Cronk about a recent project we’ve been collaborating called on DIST (Digital Impacts Schema and Taxonomy).
These sorts of in person, independent events are few and far between these days, not in the least because they take quite a lot of work to put together. Massive hats off to James Camilleri for being the driving force for making it happen, Sero for letting us meet in their lovely offices (seeing the Millennium Stadium out of the window made me so happy as you can see by the goofy grin on my face, I grew up in Cardiff and the stadium is a very special place for me), and to IntaPeople: STEM Recruitment for sponsoring the event and keeping us fed with yummy pizza. It was a lovely, intimate vibe all round.
I’ll be talking a lot more about DIST in the coming weeks, the talk at the event was a bit of a soft launch and a useful forcing function to experiment with how to present it.
In a nutshell, what we’re trying to do with DIST is steward an open-source project with a thriving community that really helps people tasked with estimating the environmental impacts of their tech. Carbon, water, minerals etc. And not just at use phase, across the whole lifecycle. 😅
